Learning not to write

Mother Airportline brought Swedish newspapers and a book by Bodil Malmsten when she came. She didn't think of this herself, I ordered her to do it. Or asked kindly. It's hard to order my mom to do anything, she is Finnish, they are not people who easily obey. They fought the Russians while the Swedes lived in their socialist dream.

Bodil Malmsten is one of the most inspiring authors I know, everytime I read her I want to write, and everytime I start writing I have to face the fact that her world is so much bigger than mine, and her Swedis prose is so much more poigant than mine. Maybe because she is older, and wiser. In a recent blog post she writes:
'I have to learn not to write. I already know how not to be able to count.' (my disturbingly poor translation).

In her book Kom och hälsa på mig om tusen år (Come and visit me in a thousand years) she writes (again, my poor translation) about reading, writing and Samuel Beckett.
'Becket was what he wrote, he wrote what he is.
There is something I've learned through the years, through all my reading, all I've read and forgotten, one thing has become clear - it's not the book your reading, its the author. No matter how little the author thinks she or he is writing about him or helself, it is about him or helself that the author is writing.'

I've never read Samuel Beckett.
I doubt that he would have the same effect on me as Bodil Malmsten.

Balls

I play floorball. It's no walk in the park. Sometimes a member in the club sends out emails to try and motivate people. He often quotes Sylvester Stallone. They are a bit insane, the emails, but have their charm. Here is an excerpt from last week's mail titled Balls, with the sub heading Philosophical discussion of balls:

You show up in trainings (and games) 365 days a year and do your 110% without questions - no matter if; you had a bad day, you had a good day, it was sunny, it rained, it snowed, it was cold, it was warm, you had to work late, you have to work early, you have a girlfriend, you have a wife, you have nobody, you have to travel 1000 km, you have to travel 10 m, you’re injured but can move, you’re mentally injured but can move, you have hangover but live, there is enough team mates, there is not enough team mates, your team mates are injured, your team mates are mentally injured, your team mates are in hangover but not dead, you have floorball ball to play with, the floorball ball is a little tiny bit broke, the floorball ball is completely broke, you don’t have floorball ball to play with, play without green hashish, play without red hashes, play without a shirt, play with your pants on/off, you have birthday, your uncles godfather’s cat has birthday, you have skills, you have no skills, you have no arm, you have no leg, you have no head, you have something, you have nothing.

This is what happens when you have too many Finnish men in your floorball team.
